SECOND GRADE OVERVIEW
Madison Avenue Second Grade is a great place to learn!!! Our
students are proud to be the “seniors” of our school as they
work toward 3rd grade. Our goal in 2nd grade is to lay the
foundation for students to become not only critical thinkers,
but also productive citizens for the future. Our expectations
for academic growth are high. With parent participation in and
out of the classroom, we can look forward to a productive,
creative, and fun year together!
MAE offers a varied reading/language curriculum consisting of
hands-on activities combined with guided reading and shared
reading. The students work in whole group, small group and
one-on-one activities that focus on the individual learner
leading them to become more independent readers.
With our new state math framework, we are focusing on more
in-depth problem solving skills using hands-on manipulatives and
small group activities. We incorporate our whole school arts
initiative in science, health, social studies, and technology to
encourage students to explore their creativity.
MAE provides many opportunities throughout the year for students
to “shine.” We perform a patriotic musical program during the
fall and small classroom productions throughout the year. The
students also participate in weekly music, physical education,
computer, library, and art classes. These experiences provide
the students with a very diverse program.
One highlight of the 2nd grade year is the weeklong hands-on
space experience.
A team from NASA joins us to provide students with scientific
inquiry. Throughout the week students enjoy a journey through
space while engaging in various centers. The wonderful support
team of parents makes this mission possible by supervising the
learning centers.
